How Using Area Rugs Can Help Your Family

Aside from adding a splash of color to your bedroom or living room or hallway, a vintage area rug offers many other great benefits:

Benefit #1: Hide That Annoying Stain

For anyone with kids or pets or if there are family members who seem to be a bit accident prone, protecting against stains and spills can be a top priority. An area rug may be just the solution that you are looking for and can be much more affordable than expensive stain treatments and replacing carpet in stained areas.

Benefit #2: Add Warmth

Area rugs provide an added layer of insulation and can actually help keep your home warmer for longer and helps keep your floors warm in the winter months. In fact, carpets and rugs offer as much as 10 times the heat retention and insulation as hardwood flooring, thus reducing your heating bill and creating a cozy, warm place to enjoy time with friends and family.

Benefit #3: Room Makeover

Adding in a vintage area rug or two can be a quick and easy way to add new life to a room. It is surprising to many homeowners when they see just how much better a new rug can make a room look. A simple rug can make a space look like a whole new room and for a fraction of the price of a room remodel or makeover.

Benefit #4: Keep Kids Safe

For a home with little ones learning to walk and toddlers running around all the time, a secure added vintage area rug can be a blessing. It protects little heads and knees and bottoms from the falls that come with learning to walk and adds a cushion to the lives of toddlers who are prone for trips and falls as they play and explore.

How to Make Your Vintage Area Rugs Last Longer

The beauty that comes from a vintage area rug can add a wonderful finishing touch to any room of your home. But how do you take care of your rug and keep it looking its best year after year?  Here are some things to keep in mind:

Take off Your Shoes

Many homeowners have taken this one to heart for the simple fact that it helps keep not just you rugs but your entire home cleaner. Set up an area on the porch or sun room where you can leave your shoes when you come in and out throughout the day.

This keeps dirt, oil, mud, and other debris from getting into your home and ground into your area rugs and carpets. If you are not fond of this strategy, then be sure to place wa high-end foot mat at the doorway and clean it regularly.

Provide an Underlay

An underlay is a layer of soft cushion that is used under the area rug. An underlay helps to prevent the flattening out of an area rug. It also helps add softness to the rug so it feels better to walk on. An underlay has the added benefit of keeping the vintage area rug in place so it doesn’t slide on the floor, aid in noise, and keeps the rug warm during cool winter months.

Vacuum and Clean on a Regular Basis

Depending on the size of the rug, you may be able to take up the rug and wash it. Some materials need to be dry-cleaned in order to protect the fabric. You may also need to go with a light surface cleaning and spot cleaning for large rugs that are too bulky to pick up and wash. Keeping your vintage area rug clean is the final way you can protect your investment and keep it looking great for years to come.

How an Area Rug Can Prove the Subtle Focal Point of a Room

Although it’s often located under a table, sofa, or even bed, the area rug in your living room, dining room, family room, office, or bedroom is more important to the overall aesthetic of a room than you might have considered. When placed on hardwood floors, they provide protection and some comfort for your feet — and they can even lengthen the lifespan of your carpets when placed in carpeted rooms. However, an area rug is not just practical; it’s also a subtle but essential focal point to a room’s décor.

A Conduit of Color

When searching for area rugs in Manchester, NH, residents who head to PRG Rugs are guaranteed to find the perfect conduit of color to add to their rooms. A rug can absorb or reflect the overall color scheme of the room depending on the color and pattern you choose, complementing the décor as a whole.

Liven Up the Floors

While hardwood floors are beautiful, they can seem a bit drab if uninterrupted for the space of an entire room. Covering a large portion in the center of a room with a rug breaks up the neutral browns of hardwood floors or the stagnant color or pattern of the carpet with another color or pattern to give the room a more active look.

Subtly Draws the Eye to the Center

Place your area rug in the center of the room or at the center of a cluster of furniture, such as in the middle of an arrangement of chairs and a sofa, and the eye can instinctively pinpoint the centerpiece of the whole design.

We stock numerous styles for area rugs in Manchester, NH, at PRG Rugs that you’re sure to find the ideal focal point for every room in your house. Our designers and craftspeople also offer custom handmade rugs to perfectly fit in with any décor. Call us today at 603-882-5604 or stop by our showroom to learn more.

Ways to Maintain Your Area Rugs

Vintage area rugs are an investment that you want to protect and maintain. As a result, it is important to schedule regular maintenance for your rugs. Read on for some tips to maintain your area rugs!

Damaging Factors to Your Rugs

  • Normal wear and tear from everyday use, constant walking, vacuuming, etc.
  • Damage from moths and other insects
  • Staining from spilled food and drinks as well as water from potted plants
  • Burning from fireplaces, smoking, candles, etc.

The frequencies for cleanings are typically determined by your family’s habits and the environments you live in. For example, if you have children, you will most likely want to send your area rugs to be cleaned at PRG Rugs more often. However, if you live alone or with one other person, you most likely will get your rugs cleaned once a year. If your area has more moisture, you will want to get it cleaned every 4 to 6 months.

Other Preventative Measures

No matter how high of a quality the materials your rugs are constructed with, it is normal for them to unravel or wear down. It is important to catch when damage starts to happen because if it is left unattended, your rug will continue to deteriorate. To salvage your rug, you will want to bring it into PRG Rugs for a professional cleaning and repair.

If you notice moths flying around, you will want to check the underside of your rug periodically to check for moths and their larvae. To prevent wool eating moths, invest in a spray and make sure to apply it on your rug periodically.

If you store your rugs, you will need to make sure that you use moth balls, cedar shavings, and seal it in brown paper or synthetic paper. To ensure that your rug is still in good condition when it is in storage, you will want to check at least once a month. For a high quality storage space, trust in the experts at PRG Rugs! We ensure that your rugs are properly maintained by frequently checking on them as well as washing and vacuuming them. Our facility is temperature and climate controlled to make sure that your rugs stay in great condition.

How to Pick the Best Area Rug

If you are about to purchase a high quality area rug from PRG Rugs, you might be overwhelmed by the options and styles you can choose from. Read on to learn some tips for picking the best area for your needs!

When you buy an area rug, you are buying a high quality product that if you maintain correctly, it can last you a lifetime. When looking for a new rug, you will want to look for the best quality you can afford. Silk and wool rugs are expensive but they are built to last. Wool rugs wear well and will still look great over time. Sisal, jute, and grass rugs look great, cost less, but do not last long. They are also hard to clean and if you spill anything such as wine, you will probably have to throw it out.

When you are deciding on a size for your new area rug, you might want to follow the rule of picking a rug that is two feet shorter than the smallest wall of the room. If you are selecting a rug that you plan to place near a door, you will want to open the door and measure from where the door rests when it’s swung open. If you are placing the area rug underneath a table, you will want to make sure it is at least 18 inches beyond the table. This way you can accommodate for any chairs you may use.

Picking the Best Area Rug for Your Home

A gorgeous area rug can brighten up your room, add drama, and be a great conversation piece. However, with so many options such as arts and crafts style rugs, rustic area rugs, Oriental styles, and so many more, it can get difficult picking one!

Read on to learn some tips on picking the best area rug for your space!

Size is the most important thing you will need to consider. Most people go by the rule that the rug should be two feet shorter than the smallest wall in the room.

Rugs Near a Door

If you are thinking of putting the rug near a door, you will want to swing the door open and measure the floor from that point. You should make sure that at least three feet remains clear from the door.

Rugs in a Hall

Rugs that you are putting in a hall should be big enough that six inches shows on all sides.

Rugs in a Dining Room

If you are placing an area rug in your dining room, you will want it to extend at least eighteen inches beyond the edge of the table. This is so that the rug can accommodate the dining room chairs.

Rugs in a Bedroom

For area rugs in your bedroom, you should consider runners on each side of the bed and the foot of the bed. You can also place a rug one-third of the way under the bed so that the rug makes a nice decorative mat at the bottom.

How to Maintain Your Vintage Area Rugs

If you are proud owner of one of PRG Rugs’s vintage area rugs, congratulations!  We offer our own high quality rug cleaning services but if you want some daily maintenance tips, read on!

Don’t Over Vacuum

Modern vacuums can be extremely strong and as a result, running a vacuum over your vintage area rugs can damage them. This is especially true if you lay your vintage area rugs over a hard floor. For a wool rug, you will want to use a carpet sweeper. If you really need to vacuum it yourself, use a canister vacuum and set the beater bar high so there’s less abrasion. Also, vacuum in a side to side motion so you don’t grab at any fringe. Another great tip is to take the rug outside and vacuum the back side of it. Embedded dirt can cause wear and tear to the fibers, over time. You should also take this time to vacuum the top. If there a lot of dust poofs, you will need to take your vintage area rugs to us so we can properly wash it!

Wash It Often But Not Too Often

Even if your vintage area rugs don’t look dirty, you will still want to wash them at least once a year. The more you wait; the built up dust and other particles can start to sink into the fibers. They get pushed down by gravity and the weight of people walking on it. The dirt slowly pulls at the fibers and causes the rug to go bare. Even with a good rubber pad underneath, the buildup of dirt can be damaging to your vintage area rugs. Make sure to sweep underneath the rug, beat it out, and wash it!

Avoid Putting Things on Your Rug

Sometimes, people make the mistake of putting too much furniture and especially, plants, on their rugs. This can cause damage because the area where there is nothing on the rug does not get air flow to it. Especially with wool, the rug might feel dry but moisture can seep to the bottom, cause mildew, and turn to dry rot.
